This year’s theme for Sunday School:
This year's theme is: "God's love is growing in me".  It's important for us to listen to Jesus' stories because that's how God's love, the gospel, is planted within us.  When God's love takes root and grows up within us we have more than enough love to face hard challenges and share with others.

CURRICULUM :

We will, again, be using the "SPARK" curriculum for Sunday School, for ages 3 through 3rd grades.  This was very successful and very popular last year.  Each lesson focuses on the scripture lessons that are read during worship, linking our time in Sunday school with our time in worship.  There are also take-home sheets that can help us think about, talk about, and experience the lessons during our whole week.  God is with us every minute of every day.  Can we spend a few minutes with him?

ReNew: The Green VBS

This was the theme of this summer’s Vacation Bible School for Zion Lutheran.  We looked at the parable of the sower and the seed the whole week, talking about the seeds landing on the rocky soil, the thorny soil, the path where the birds ate the seed, and the seeds landing on the good soil and producing a wonderful harvest.  We also talked about how the seed is the Word of God and that our hearts are the soil that receives the Word.  We can be the good soil by helping and loving others as God loves us.

Day 1 : Planting Seeds –

Eco Question: Why do people plant seeds? Spiritual Question: Why does God plant seeds?

Daily Tagline: God’s love is a seed in me.

Day 2: Taking Root

Eco Question: What do seeds need to take root? Spiritual Question: What are my spiritual roots?

Daily Tagline: God’s love takes root in me.

“God’s Love Takes Root in Me” was the theme for Day 2 of VBS.  We took the theme to heart and planted a new set of roots: a Japanese White Pine.  The tree came to Zion through a memorial from Kathleen Thola for her mother, Kathryn Mary Schmidt, who died in 2005.  Because most of our 43 VBS students had never seen a tree planted, this was a special event for all in attendance.  May God bless all people who have helped faith take root in our hearts.

Daily Tagline: We live together in God’s love

Our mission project this year was “Kids Against Hunger” - Feeding families around the world…and around the corner.

KAH takes 23 cents and changes it into a meal for up to 6 people.  This meal is made up of rice and other nutrients that help people eat a good meal, sometimes the only meal that they might get that day.

The VBS students brought in almost $150 dollars to be used to make the meals for children.  This will make about 600 bags of the rice meal which will make about 3600 meals total.

We will be making these bags of food on Sunday, September 18 between worship services.  Everyone is invited to join this very fun activity.

We had a special VBS for our 4th and 5th graders who were “On The Road” each day to a different activity sight.  Monday they went to the Windmill in Fulton, Tuesday to the Post Office, Wednesday to the Recycling Center, and Thursday to the Arboretum.  It was new experience for our VBS students and lots of fun and learning took place.
